Our next family car...

Becky is currently driving a very functional Honda Odyssey that has served us reliably for several years.

It is a seven passenger so we totally fill it up.
It gets RIDICULOUS when we go on vacations.

I don’t know what to get her next. She thinks a Suburban is too big. I say heck with that -- we need to return to our roots: a Ford Econoline!

A few thoughts:

1) New Odysseys have an eighth seat.

2) There are pretty serious rumors floating around that Honda is going to introduce a diesel Odyssey in one or two years. It should get 35 or 40 mpg.

3) If I could figure out a way to justify it (driveway space, $), I would buy a Dodge/Frieghtliner/Mercedes Sprinter with 10 seats in it. They have a Mercedes diesel and get 22-25 MPG around town. And they are not really bigger than the Ford monstrosity in your post. Imagine taking your family AND friends on a road trip together!

here here!!!
why hasnt anyone invented a cooler alternative than the mini van or suburban?
that is what you are confined to seriously. i find it creatively opressive. but this Econoline is pretty sweet.

(1) I love the new Odysseys. They fit the eighth seat in what was the aisle of the prior model, so overall storage space is still small for a family of my size. It would allow us to take a passenger, though.

(2) Becky is waiting for technology to catch up to the minivan market. Diesel is a step in the right direction. She would love a hybrid . I wouldn't be surprised to see a near-term Sienna come out in a hybrid model (I don't like the Sienna nearly as much as the Odyssey, though). A diesel hybrid would be optimal.

(3) I have seen a proliferation of Sprinters on the road as work vehicles. I saw one that was converted into an RV about a week ago and another that was a bus. It would be sweet to be able to take a ton of passengers AND still get decent gas mileage. I don't know that it would fit in my garage though -- they are very tall.

Ha Ha!

Like I'd ever drive a gas guzler like the Ford Econo line. . .unless they go biodiesel on me and we have that fantastic mechanic whose name escapes me convert it to jet engine and get 100 miles to the gallon.

We'd be cruisen in the Ford no problem!

Hi:

Tripped over your blog while searching for a pop top for an Econoline.

Just thought I'd point out that the Ford Econoline is available with a diesel so you can run bio-diesel if you want. They make passenger models up to 15 if you need that many.

As you mentioned Dodge/Mercedes Sprinter is also available with a diesel and the build passenger models.

I hope this helps.

Craig In Canada again:

Had one other thought, Toyota already makes a diesel passenger van like you want, only they don't sell it in North America.

It is called the TownAce.
